October 2019 NPD Sales Results –
The US video game sales results for October 2019 are in and, on the face of it, the industry as a whole looks terrible. But as always with numbers and statistics, the devil is in the details. For the month, total video game spending was $1.03 billion compared to $1.57 billion last year, a dramatic 34% drop. However, last year was a bit abnormal thanks to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 comes out earlier this month than this year, and Red Dead Redemption 2 comes out this month as well. Looking at the historical trend, October 2019 is the second most important decade of October. This means that software sales are the most affected this year, at $620 million compared to $983 million last year (but still up from 2015-2017).
The biggest sign of this generation’s aging is device sales, which brought in just $182 million, down from $307 million the previous year and the lowest level in five years. With a new generation of cars coming out in about a year, and no real price drop, it’s no surprise that customers aren’t taking the bait. The Switch is the only exception, and Nintendo is once again in first place for the month and year.
Luigi Manor 3 reached third place in total software sales in October 2019. That’s impressive, because on the 31st… October and also because Nintendo makes no mention of selling digital NPD products. We know this is the best start for any game in the series. It’s also a bit surprising that Ring Fit Adventure managed to make it into the top 10. We knew it sold well in Japan, but it seems to have caught our attention here as well. Thanks to NAP and ResetEra, the top 20 are at the bottom of the rankings:
